Background of the Study

Obesity is a major public health issue, with a significant link to chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. In Kaduna State, rising obesity rates have been linked to sedentary lifestyles, poor dietary habits, and a lack of access to recreational facilities. Physical activity has long been recognized as a key factor in managing and preventing obesity, yet many individuals in Kaduna lead physically inactive lives. This study will explore the relationship between physical activity levels and obesity prevalence in Kaduna State, aiming to identify the role of lifestyle factors and the barriers to physical activity that contribute to the obesity epidemic in the region.

Statement of the Problem

Obesity is becoming increasingly prevalent in Kaduna State, particularly among adults, and is contributing to the rise in lifestyle-related diseases. One of the key factors contributing to this rise is the low level of physical activity. The sedentary nature of modern life, coupled with limited opportunities for exercise, especially in urban areas, has resulted in a growing obesity problem. This study aims to assess the physical activity levels in the state and explore their impact on obesity prevalence, with the goal of informing public health interventions to promote healthier lifestyles.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the levels of physical activity among residents of Kaduna State.
  2. To examine the relationship between physical activity levels and obesity prevalence in Kaduna State.
  3. To identify factors that limit physical activity participation and contribute to obesity in the region.

Research Questions

  1. What are the levels of physical activity among the adult population in Kaduna State?
  2. How are physical activity levels related to obesity prevalence in Kaduna State?
  3. What are the main barriers to engaging in physical activity that contribute to obesity in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Higher levels of physical activity are inversely related to obesity prevalence in Kaduna State.
  2. Sedentary lifestyles significantly increase the likelihood of obesity among residents of Kaduna State.
  3. Lack of access to recreational facilities and cultural factors limit the levels of physical activity in Kaduna State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on adults aged 18-50 in both urban and rural areas of Kaduna State. Limitations may include the reliance on self-reported physical activity data, which could introduce bias, and the challenge of controlling for other confounding factors such as genetics and socioeconomic status.

Definitions of Terms
